An advanced training for mediators and other professionals who work with families
***To register visit our website at http://www.pccdr.org***
This is a 3-day advanced training for mediators and other professional family workers presented by the Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution. This training is
designed specifically for:
• Family workers, therapists, counselors, teachers, youth workers
• Mediators who have completed their basic 40-hour training.
This training includes a combination of class discussion and lecture, small group exercises, and simulated role-plays gleamed from common parent/teen conflicts in mediation. Common issues in Parent/Teen
(P/T) mediation include: communication, respect, trust, school performance and behavior, curfew, friends, appearance, freedom. The goals of
P/T mediation are to bring accountability, consistency, and communication between parents and families. Parent/teen mediation, perhaps more so than most applications of mediation, is truly about the process rather than the outcome. While agreements are considered one of the goals of the process, it is the process itself that impacts the family so effectively; walking the family through the stages of the process while modeling effective communication skills. The training model encourages families to mediate 2-4 sessions over a period of weeks/months.
Agenda Overview of 3-day Parent/Teen Mediation Training:
• History of P/T – Application of parent/teen mediation
• Communication skills review
• Introduction of 6 stage outline – includes caucus
• Intake – Screening appropriate cases, gathering relevant information
• Teen developmental issues
• Our biases regarding family issues – Our experiences as teens
• Family communication conflict strategies
• Building buy-in and use of caucus
• Dealing with “big” issues – trust, responsibility, freedom, respect
Location: Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution
Dates: (3 days) Friday, Saturday, Sunday, April 16,
17, 18, 2010, 8:30 am -5:30 pm
Presenter: Marc Steiner, MA, was the coordinator and trainer of the Parent/Teen Mediation Program for the New Mexico Center for Dispute Resolution. The P/T program received 500 referrals a year, primarily from juvenile justice, schools, and other community organizations. Marc has trained hundreds nationally over the past 20 years in this specialized field including consulting in program implementation and design.

education credits) satisfying continuing licensure or certification requirements or just want to add to your social work or counseling
skills, the wide selection of program offerings help to satisfy a great variety of special interests and needs. Return to this
page each month as offerings change month.
Licensure and certification in professional counseling require the therapist to
participate continuing education to strengthen counselor psychotherapy skills and abilities.
Note on us:
on CounselingSeattle.com Workshop Calendar page. Adding an
apostrophe to a set of initials is a possessive form which we
consider incorrect usage. Therefore, we use upper case initials with a
lower case "s" to show the plural form. Specifically, we use "CEUs"
for Continuing education units [rather than CEU's], "CECs" for
Continuing Education Credits [rather than CEC's], CEHs for Continuing
Education Hours [rather than CEH's] and PDHs for Professional
Development Hours [rather than PDH's].
