Visions of Change: a group for women

Who Should Participate: This group is for women who are READY for Change. Their anxiety or depression is making it hard to be a mother, a wife, a good friend or get their job done. They have hit their limit, feel alone with their problems and want to get energized to move on with their lives. They have problems with trusting people or trusting people too much and feeling taken advantage of. They sacrifice their needs for others and then are angry and hurt when others are selfish or inconsiderate. They may feel out of control with food, credit cards, shoplifting, holding grudges or overwhelming memories of abuse and violence that will not give them a moment's peace. This group is for women who have taken steps to change on their own but can't seem to stick with it or find a way that helps them feel better. They are interested in a support group because they don't want to be alone. They have heard about how support groups can be more effective than individual therapy. You don't have to talk all the time and you can learn from listening to other's working through their problems and learning from their successes. And Group therapy is CHEAPER!

Circle Of Healing from Abuse

Who Should Participate: Wednesday: Broken Hearts Club for Women who have recently divorced or broken-up with a partner, who are in the process of divorcing/separating, or seriously considering terminating an Abusive Relationship. www.ToolKitForHealing.com/14.html Tuesday: Circle of Healing is a group in Seattle for optimizing the healing process of people who have experienced chronic verbal & other emotional abuse and who may have also experienced incidences of sexual and/or physical abuse. Did you grow up in a family where there was chronic Verbal Abuse? Have you been in a partnership with someone who was Emotionally Abusive? Like many others, you may be experiencing some of the following PTSD symptoms: depression and/or anxiety (maybe mild and recurrent), flashbacks, marked distress or phobia of stimuli related to the abuse, intrusive thoughts of abuse, numbing, isolation, anger management or other behavioral control issues, difficulties concentrating, exaggerated startle response, and sense of diminished future. Group therapy provides support for survivors of abusive relationships, who often feel isolated in their distress. The Circle of Healing provides members with a ToolKit for managing and alleviating symptoms of abuse. The symptoms require a specific set of skills. The most efficient way of learning these skills is in a group setting. Without the skills needed to alleviate PTSD symptoms, progress is very slow and uneven. Definitions and Limitations

Groups designated as "ongoing and continuous" groups admit new members periodically and members leave when they feel they've accomplished their therapy goals. Groups designated as "educational" or "closed' meet for a indicated time period. This site offers information regarding groups, group therapy, and group therapy professionals throughout the State of Washington. Nothing here should be construed as a suggestion regarding treatment nor as an endorsement of a professional or therapeutic method. Contact the provider regarding their professional qualifications, fees, theoretical orientation, and the appropriateness of the process for the treatment you are seeking.

On Telephone Calls to Therapists

As a webmaster, I frequently call counselors and I am caught off balance when I don't get an answering machine.  I say, "Excuse me, I was expecting to talk to a machine and wasn't expecting to talk to a real person!"

Counselors in private practice are small business people--really small--and usually have no employees.  Counselors usually handle the telephone, counsel individual clients and groups, get the mail, write the letters, do the bookkeeping, market their practices, do the taxes and everything else that needs to be done to stay in business.  Counselors in private practice often see clients in the evening, so it is usually better to call in the morning.

All this to explain that when you finally decide to call a counselor and see about joining a therapy group, you will probably get an answering machine.  It may take a couple of days for the counselor to get back to you.  Even if they call you back immediately, if there is another voice on your answering machine they may be afraid that they will be violating your confidentiality if they leave a message for you where someone else may hear them.  So they may have to hang up without leaving a message.  Be sure when you leave your message that you tell the counselor whether it's all right to leave a message when he or she calls back.

And finally, if you don't hear back--please call again.  Leave your name and telephone number.  Say the number slowly and distinctly and say it twice.  I can remember listening to messages as many as twelve times trying to identify all the numbers; Counselors really try, but you've got to do your part too.  Thanks.
