(3.)
Re-evaluation Counseling, a theory of counseling founded by Carl Harvey Jackins (1916-1999)
was the founder and principal theorist. Crying, laughter, shaking and
other types of bodily "discharge" were found to be useful in venting or
releasing bottled-up old emotional feelings--feelings which Jackins believed
caused shortcomings or limitations on the flexibility and intelligence or
rationality with which people processed everyday situations. Jackins found
that effective discharge frequently led to improved clarity of thought, or
"re-evaluation." In 1952, Jackins formed a corporation named Personal
Counselors Inc. to "engage in, conduct and teach the art and science of
Dianetics." His "Co-Counseling" began to be called Re-evaluation Counseling in
the late 1950s. In the early 1960s, Jackins organized his views into a new
system or disciplined approach to encouraging discharge and
re-evaluation--Re-evaluation Counseling.
